On her Instagram account @izela_lange, Izela provides around 277k followers with inspiration for tidy and organised homes. “When building a house”, says the content creator, “for me, the kitchen and utility room have to be finished before I can think about the rest of the house.” This is what she did in her own home, opting for Schüller in the utility room.
Utility room storage and organisation
Izela’s solutions for small items
“I would always design drawers to store small things like cleaning products and cloths!” Izela finds the drawers with transparent glass side panels very practical as she can easily see what’s in high drawers from the side. Boxes or drawer dividers create additional partitions within drawers to keep things organised. This makes it easy to spot if something is missing and what you need to stock up on.
Izela’s storage solutions for large items
Izela keeps large, cumbersome and heavy items like the vacuum cleaner, drying rack, ladder and mop in tall units. Alternatively, cupboard units can also be incorporated into the design for utility room storage. For example, if you have not factored in any extra larder space, a tall unit shelf can be used for drink crates.
Early on in her design, Izela decided she wanted a utility room “for everything to do with washing and cleaning”.
Making use of height and open storage spaces
Several small drawers instead of high drawers
Izela recommends the following: “I would make sure the distance between drawers isn’t as high and instead have an extra drawer to keep things well organised. Otherwise, it’s a waste of vertical storage space and you end up having to take everything out if things are piled on top of each other.”
Shelves with transparent containers
To make use of all the storage space in the tall units, Izela opted for shelving. Here she uses transparent boxes, so she can “see what’s in there straight away”. Labelling the baskets helps keep things even more organised.
Baskets for easy access
Izela chose open shelving for above the washing machine. Here she uses stylish wicker baskets to store everyday items like smaller tea towels, cloths and rags that need to be close to hand. Aesthetic, tidy, practical and convenient!
Izela's must-haves for a well-organised
utility room
We asked Izela which storage solutions she loves most in her utility room and which make tasks easier: “Simply the room itself! I have to start with that because it’s just a beautiful room in which I enjoy spending time. Sometimes it’s my favourite place to escape.”
Not only does the utility room make daily household tasks much easier but the stylish design options also helped make the room a personal haven for Izela. The countless colour and material combinations made it easy to apply the contrasting colour schemes that characterise her interior design style to the utility room too.
Pull-out shelves as storage spaces
Izela is particularly thrilled with the pull-out shelves under the washing machine and dryer, which offer a practical storage space for the laundry basket at an ideal height. It means the laundry basket is no longer in the way on the floor and loading the machine is easy on her back.
Tall unit for sorting laundry
The tall unit, which Izela calls her “laundry-sorting cupboard”, definitely does its name justice. The tall unit is ideal for hiding laundry baskets behind the door, and the cut-outs save her from having to open it frequently.
It conceals dirty washing, saves space and makes Izela’s life much easier as dirty laundry can be separated straight away. This way, she can clearly see what washing needs to be done. “Our children are always playing with it”, she adds with a laugh. “It teaches them how to organise their laundry and take responsibility at home in a playful way.”
At the end of the interview, Izela sums up what the utility room means for her and her family in a nutshell: “For us, the kitchen is the heart of home life. It’s where all the social interaction takes place and where we spend time together each day. And the utility room helps us organise everything else.”
Why Izela opted for Schüller
Planning from home
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the new build had to be planned from home at first, so the online planner was a real lifesaver. Izela Lange says, “Thanks to the online planner, I could get an initial idea of the design options in my head. My own plans were then used as a basis for the discussions with my architect.”
Customisations
Thanks to the modular system with units and drawers, the utility room can be customised to your individual needs.
Izela’s tip: keep things tidy with units, drawers, boxes and baskets and make use of the entire cupboard depth to store larger items.
Easy retailer search
Thanks to the online planner, Izela was able to calmly design her room by herself. She sent the final design to local kitchen studios, which she found in the retailer list on our website. The visual and technical details like the water supply and electrics were then fine-tuned with the kitchen studio: “You have to get an expert eye to look at it to make sure everything in the final design works together and makes sense.”
