The right working height in the kitchen:
Why it's important

Kitchen chores made easy

You want to feel at home in your own kitchen, where everyday tasks should be effortless with everything in the right place. Anyone who has worked on a worktop that is too high or low knows how important it is for the working height to be just right. If it’s not, discomfort or even pain are on the cards rather than ergonomics and comfort.

In the following five points, we explain what you need to bear in mind and why the right working height can make everyday tasks a piece of cake.

Rule of thumb for the working height

Rule of thumb for the working height

The right working height in the kitchen is essential and should be included in the kitchen planning from the very beginning.

As a rule, the optimum working height is about 10 to 15 cm from your elbow when bent. The working height is calculated by adding the heights of the plinth, carcase and worktop.

THICKNESS OF THE WORKTOP + CARCASE HEIGHT + PLINTH HEIGHT
= WORKING HEIGHT

#1 Ergonomics and health

Even those averse to cooking have daily tasks in the kitchen; besides preparing and cooking meals, there’s also the washing-up, emptying the dishwasher and putting food away.

The right working height is associated with ergonomic benefits that prevent pain and result in a more comfortable, natural posture. Above all, this helps prevent back issues. Find out how ergonomic planning can really help you and your kitchen!

#2 Efficient cooking

If the working height is adapted to your needs, you can carry out your tasks more quickly and efficiently.

There is no need to alter your posture when cutting, and when you’re cooking you have a perfect view of all pots and pans. This helps save energy and you can immerse yourself fully in your cooking without giving it too much thought.

#3 Prevention of accidents and injuries

#3 Prevention of accidents and injuries

As well as long-term physical damage, especially to your back and neck, the wrong working height can also pose a risk of accidents.

Unnatural postures increase stress on your body and thus the risk of injury when working in the kitchen. The right height reduces this risk, as well as potential hindrances and trip hazards.

#4 Functional storage space

#4 Functional storage space

The right working height makes storage space in the kitchen more easily accessible. Drawers and pull-outs are at the right height so that you can open them comfortably.

Frequently used foods and utensils in particular are always close at hand where you don’t need to bend or stretch to reach them. Perfect coordination also gives you a better overview and helps you to organise your storage space.

#5 Customised design

#5 Customised design

When home owners are all different heights, you need to find a compromise and the kitchen should be primarily adapted to the main user.

However, if it’s not clear who that is, you need to find a happy balance. Large height differences in particular can be accounted for by planning a seating area so that food prep can be comfortably carried out by smaller occupants.

Carcase height – the basis for customised kitchen planning

Schüller offers three carcase heights of 71.5, 78 and 84.5 cm combined with seven plinth heights and two worktop thicknesses that enable you to seamlessly create perfect working heights. The correct working height can be found in stages from 78.1 cm to a maximum of 108.4 cm. Further information on ergonomics and systems

Work areas at different heights are also worth considering – a lower cooking area gives you a perfect overview of all of your pots and pans, while a sink that is installed higher up makes the washing-up easier.
